Tenders called for entry-level Gisborne winery

A boutique winery operation with its own vineyard in the heart of Tairāwhiti’s highly regarded Ormond wine district is for sale by tender.

Bayleys real estate agent Simon Bousfield says the sale offers a rare chance to buy an established, fully integrated vineyard and winery facility on 11.9ha of flat land less than 20 minutes from Gisborne city.

“This property offers an exceptional opportunity for those seeking to enter the wine industry or expand their current operation in the thriving Tairāwhiti wine region,” says Bousfield.

The planted area of 9.7ha is in newly established Sauvignon Blanc vines across two separate titles of 6.5ha and 5.4ha about 100m apart on Ngakoroa Road in the Ormond district.

The purpose-built winery building was completed in 2003 and is centrally located on the larger title.

The 524 square metre building is constructed from steel portals and insulated panel cladding. The winery area totals 410 square metres and houses specialised equipment designed to process grapes and produce wine on-site.

A 20 square metre office space is on the ground floor and there is a self-contained 49 square metre accommodation unit and 20 square metre meeting room on the mezzanine floor above.

Bousfield says he although he expects the property will appeal to aspiring winemakers looking to take their first step into winery ownership, it will also draw buyers looking to re-purpose the winery space to suit new business options.

“The winery building is set back from the road and could easily be transformed into a facility for a range of other business activities.”

“A buyer could continue growing grapes and supply another established winery in the district rather than making their own wine on site, freeing up the building for another business venture,” he says.

Available within the current winery operation comes is a large range of quality wine producing equipment, and there is the option to negotiate with the vendor to purchase about 70,000 bottles of wine currently in stock.

“That would be perfect for immediate revenue stream for incoming owners,” he says.

Tenders must be submitted by 4pm on Wednesday February 26 at Bayleys Real Estate Gisborne.
