Hawke’s Bay large scale horticultural opportunity

Investors and growers wanting to unlock large scale horticulture potential can capitalise on one of the biggest contiguous holdings of premium Horticultural land on the Heretaunga Plains, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.

Located approximately midway between Napier and Hastings’s cities, on Farndon Road and State Highway 51 at Clive, the 174ha of entirely flat, drained land has a proven track record for consistently growing high quality, high yielding commercial crops including apples, export squash, onions and maize.

The property’s versatility is highlighted by the 34 hectares leased to a reputable large scale apple grower/exporter.

The property is being marketed by James Macpherson and Tony Rasmussen of Bayleys Havelock North.

They point to a high level of stewardship and care being taken with the land, including avoiding compaction with livestock or winter cropping by leaving paddocks fallow over winter before intensive spring planting begins.

“Almost the entire property is tile drained which has immeasurably increased its productivity and versatility. It has proven to cope well with the wet periods we have experienced in past years,” says Tony Rasmussen.

With tile drainage lifting the property’s capacity, the addition of almost complete irrigation and full consented water take makes the block’s resilience to both ends of the weather spectrum extremely robust.

The irrigation infrastructure includes hydrants across the entire block, and several wells for the travelling irrigators currently in use.

The drainage and irrigation systems mean the highly fertile silt loam soils are achieving their full potential and offer the ability to grow a spectrum of produce, from permanent horticulture such as apples and kiwifruit to vegetables and seasonal crops.

The block is available for sale in its entirety, or as four separate blocks comprising 33.47ha, 68.76ha and 39.53ha of bare land, and a 34.63ha apple orchard that is currently leased to Enzafruit.

Flexibility across all four blocks is significantly increased by each having road access.

Investors and growers are invited to place a tender on any or all of the blocks by Friday July 31. Interest is expected to be strong both within the Hawke’s Bay horticulture community, nationally, and internationally.

“It is very rare, if ever in your career, you get the opportunity to market a property of this calibre and scale in Hawke’s Bay.”

“It is a privilege to market the property - it has been very well looked after by its current owner and will continue to produce high value fruit or produce into the future” says James Macpherson.
